The term \u201cinsect\u201d used to be less specific, and historically, the study of animals belonging to other arthropod groups, such as arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans, would also be included in the concept of entomology.\n        <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<h3>33 species<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>There are 33 known insect species that feed on corpses, explained Lt. The team only works on corpses that have a criminal suspicion.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<h3>19 decomposed bodies<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>With the help of insect database, Dubai Police specialists have successfully determined the time of death of 19 decomposed bodies, he told Gulf News<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>Out of the total, 10 were normal death and others due to murder or drug overdose.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"adv\">\n<div id=\"gulfnews_uae_article_3\" data-gpt=\"Gulfnews_Article\/gulfnews_uae_article\/gulfnews_uae_article_3\" data-atf=\"0\" data-size=\"[320,50]\" data-size-mapping=\"[ [ [ 1024, 500 ], [ [300,100], [300,250], [710,250], [710,400], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [ 768, 420], [ [300,100], [300,250], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [640, 320], [ [300,250], [300,100], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [0, 0], [ [300,250], [300,100], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ] ]\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>The forensic entomology database, developed in collaboration with NSF International, relies on the scientific application of insects and other arthropods in the criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>Insects or arthropods are usually found in decomposing vertebrate corpses or carrion (decaying flesh of dead animals, including human flesh).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>The database hosts information on insects\u2019 larvae morphology (the study and description of the physical form of insects), growth histories, species distribution \u2014 as well toxic contents in their tissue and how they change according to each stage of decomposition.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<h3>Post-mortem index<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>Lt. We then put these under close monitoring, studied insects that fed on the mice over the decomposition process, made notes on how the environment variable affected the dead creatures and recorded the insects\u2019 larvae stages,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>The team then collected information and see how insect species grow, are formed, and how they deal with different stages of decomposition of the corpse.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>\u201cThis information will help us if we encounter a case in the same environment and in the same circumstances. These experiments contributed greatly to the Dubai Police forensic entomology database and enriched our knowledge on the link between policing and entomology.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<h3>Pioneer database in the Middle East<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>Dubai Police have the first and only insect database in the Middle East. By early next year (2024), the project will be applied in Gulf countries and certain Arab countries.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>\u201cWe will do the same experiment, counting them in order for this database to be comprehensive. The mother database is in Dubai.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>Lt Al Marzouqi added: \u201cWe work on the ground and conduct our experiments in the natural, real atmosphere. And we do these experiments to obtain highly-accurate information.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>He expects the number of species to increase. He indicated that experiments and monitoring of corpses with thermal cameras are ongoing with daily field visits and data collection.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>This way, he said, \u201cwe can know, through the insect\u2019s species and the size of the insect, the time of death and the place of death.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>\u201cThrough the insect that eats the body, we can know if there was any drug abuse or consumption of narcotic substances that contributed to the death of the person,\u201d said Lt. When the forensic entomology team moved to the site, they found a decomposed body in the vehicle which aroused suspicion.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>Insects found on the body helped investigators know the cause of the death and the circumstances led to the death.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>It turned out the body was that of a man who died two days earlier due to drug overdose.
