







{"id":25752,"date":"2025-08-10T11:09:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T11:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cissar.com\/?p=25752"},"modified":"2025-08-10T11:09:26","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T11:09:26","slug":"former-british-diplomats-urge-starmer-and-macron-to-recognise-palestinian-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cissar.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/10\/former-british-diplomats-urge-starmer-and-macron-to-recognise-palestinian-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Former British diplomats urge Starmer and Macron to recognise Palestinian state"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-body clearfix\">\n<p>A group of 26 former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/uk\">British<\/a> diplomats has written a letter to the Times newspaper urging Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/big-story\/keir-starmer-man-who-would-be-prime-minister\">Keir Starmer <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/france\">French<\/a> President Emmanuel Macron to recognise a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>The letter has been signed by former British ambassadors to numerous Middle Eastern countries, including Sir Dominick Chilcott, a former ambassador to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/turkey\">Turkey<\/a>, Peter Millett, a former ambassador to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/libya\">Libya<\/a> and Lord Andrew Green, who was ambassador to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/saudi-arabia\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/comment\/letters-to-editor\/article\/times-letters-tech-free-cloisters-jzjhgn8f0\">published<\/a> the letter on Monday morning, although the headline of the letters page online was about how &#8220;tech-free &#8216;cloisters&#8217; can help young minds&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Signatories to the letter on recognising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/palestine\">Palestine<\/a> also include Sir William Patey, a former ambassador to Afghanistan, as well as Peter Jenkins, Sir Jeremy Greenstock and Lord David Hannay, three former ambassadors to the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Macron is set to visit the UK on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When Sir Keir Starmer receives President Macron tomorrow, they will reaffirm their welcome determination to support Ukraine&#8230; We need that same unity of purpose over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/israel\">Israel<\/a> and Palestine,&#8221; the letter reads.<\/p>\n<p>The diplomats write that Starmer and Macron should press again for an &#8220;immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>They add that the two leaders should &#8220;decide now to recognise the state of Palestine unconditionally, endorsing the Palestinian right to self-determination alongside Israel&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Britain and France together will bring Commonwealth and European partners with them. He then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/may\/28\/uk-trade-envoy-lord-austin-visit-israel-talks-suspended-sparks-criticism\">visited<\/a> Israel to &#8220;drum up business for Britain&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>Plans to recognise Palestinian state dropped<\/h3>\n<p>Last month France was preparing to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/netanyahu-unsettled-macrons-push-recognise-palestinian-statehood\">unilaterally recognise<\/a> a Palestinian state at a\u00a0major UN conference on the two-state solution beginning on 17 June in New York, which it was set to co-host with Saudi Arabia. At the time, sources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/netanyahu-unsettled-macrons-push-recognise-palestinian-statehood\">told <\/a>Middle East Eye the proposed move had &#8220;unsettled&#8221; Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mee-readmore mee-readmore-article-story mee-readmore-type-image align-right\"><a class=\"mee-readmore-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/uk-and-france-abandon-plans-recognise-palestinian-state-conference\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mee-readmore-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/read_more\/public\/images-story\/MACRON_STARMER_AFP.jpg.webp?itok=AQh2zptx\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"mee-readmore-description\">UK and France abandon plans to recognise Palestinian state at conference<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"mee-readmore-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/uk-and-france-abandon-plans-recognise-palestinian-state-conference\">Read More \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>MEE understands that France was lobbying Britain to recognise a Palestinian state at the conference alongside it.<\/p>\n<p>In late May, Ron Dermer, Israel&#8217;s strategic affairs minister,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/israel-threatens-uk-and-france-west-bank-annexation-if-they-recognise-palestine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatened<\/a>\u00a0Britain and France that Israel may annex parts of the West Bank if they recognised a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>And the US privately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/exclusive-us-warned-uk-and-france-against-palestine-recognition-month\">warned<\/a> the two European countries against unilaterally recognising Palestine, sources with knowledge of the matter in the British Foreign Office told MEE.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly afterwards, both countries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jun\/07\/saudi-arabia-conference-to-recognise-palestinian-state-weakens-scope-ambition-diplomats-say\">reportedly<\/a> decided against recognising Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>The planned UN conference was then postponed in mid-June amid hostilities between Israel and Iran.<\/p>\n<p>British\u00a0Foreign Secretary David Lammy\u00a0has publicly opposed unilateral recognition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/uk-mps-press-fm-lammy-palestine-recognition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insisting<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year that the UK would only recognise a Palestinian state &#8220;when we know it\u2019s going to happen and it\u2019s in sight&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If France and Britain recognised a Palestinian state, it would likely cause a political earthquake, since they would become the first G7 nations to do so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of 26 former British diplomats has written a letter to the Times newspaper urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron to recognise a Palestinian state.
