to pay the Taliban to take back deported Afghans, as part of the party&#8217;s new plans to deport 600,000 illegal migrants from Britain within five years, if they win power in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Party leader Nigel Farage announced on Wednesday that a Reform government would negotiate returns agreements with countries including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/tags\/eritrea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eritrea<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/tags\/afghanistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afghanistan<\/a>, which is governed by the Taliban.<\/p>\n<p>The Telegraph\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2025\/08\/26\/taliban-ready-and-willing-work-with-nigel-farage-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that a senior Taliban official based in Kabul said:\u00a0&#8220;We will not take money to accept our own people, but we welcome aid to support newcomers, since there are challenges in accommodating and feeding those returning from Iran and Pakistan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One man was particularly unimpressed: the Liberal Democrat MP for Tunbridge Wells, Mike Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Martin, who sits on parliament&#8217;s defence select committee, took to social media platform X to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThreshedThought\/status\/1960309114812137739\">denounce<\/a> what he labelled Reform&#8217;s &#8220;financing terrorists&#8221; plan, and noted that he had fought the Taliban when he was serving in the British armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday evening Martin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThreshedThought\/status\/1960700846900978021\">published<\/a> a letter he had written to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper entitled &#8220;Request for an investigation into a possible offence under the Terrorism Act 2000&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Section 12(1) of the act, his letter noted, makes it a crime\u00a0to invite support for a proscribed terrorist organisation.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Completely insane letter&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;The public suggestion of a policy to make payments to the Taliban government, which would undoubtedly result in funds reaching individuals and organisations proscribed as terrorists by the United Kingdom, may constitute an offence,&#8221; Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>He asked the home secretary to investigate whether Yusuf&#8217;s statements violate the Terrorism Act, &#8220;and if deemed appropriate, refer the matter to the relevant authorities for further investigation and action&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Yusuf initially responded on X with a laughing emoji.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"ht\">Lmao \ud83e\udd23 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mFJIfmJKUg\">https:\/\/t.co\/mFJIfmJKUg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Zia Yusuf (@ZiaYusufUK) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZiaYusufUK\/status\/1960770269381058632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 27, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Matters took another turn when Martin <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThreshedThought\/status\/1960700846900978021\">threatened<\/a> to sue Yusuf after he accused the Tunbridge Wells MP\u00a0of calling &#8220;for me to be locked up under terrorism charges for proposing an alternative policy position&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Martin <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThreshedThought\/status\/1960700846900978021\">said<\/a> Yusuf&#8217;s claim was inaccurate, and warned that if Yusuf did not take his post down and &#8220;make a \u00a3100 donation to a charity of my choice&#8221;, he would &#8220;be finding some lawyers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Prominent left-wing journalist Aaron Bastani <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AaronBastani\/status\/1960780460482813976\">commented<\/a> that Martin &#8220;wants Zia Yusuf investigated under the very same legislation that is being used to arrest people who hold signs saying \u2018I support Palestine Action\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The 2000 Terrorism Act is absurd and illiberal. Obviously someone should be able to say what Yusuf did.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Owen Jones, another prominent left-wing journalist and commentator, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/owenjonesjourno\/status\/1960835233189912709\">remarked<\/a>: &#8220;What a completely insane letter to send&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;This is clearly lawfare&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Reform councillor Stuart Davies <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/studaviesinc\/status\/1960976640931979364\">noted<\/a> that the UK government has given over \u00a3480m in humanitarian and development assistance to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative councillor Richard Davies <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rgdavies\/status\/1960968839409127443\">said<\/a>: &#8220;This is clearly lawfare &#8211; an attempt to shut down legitimate debate by threatening legal action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps awkwardly for Martin, after Yusuf&#8217;s initial comments, Prime Minister Keir Starmer&#8217;s spokesperson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2025\/08\/26\/taliban-ready-and-willing-work-with-nigel-farage-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicated<\/a>\u00a0the Labour government would not rule out a returns agreement with Afghanistan, saying: &#8220;We\u2019re not going to take anything off the table.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative Party&#8217;s chair, Kevin Hollinrake, also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/live\/2025\/aug\/27\/conservatives-consider-deal-afghanistan-migrants-uk-politics-latest-updates-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0Times Radio his party would &#8220;potentially&#8221; be willing to strike a deal with the Taliban to return migrants.<\/p>\n<p>The Taliban, an armed group and political movement, first took power in Afghanistan in the 1990s, and was accused by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>\u00a0of harbouring fighters belonging to al-Qaeda after the 9\/11 attacks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mee-readmore mee-readmore-article-story mee-readmore-type-image align-right\"><a class=\"mee-readmore-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/reform-uk-candidate-muslim-scholar-racist-abuse-campaign\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mee-readmore-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/read_more\/public\/images-story\/sidney-malik-top.jpg.webp?itok=YWXoJtpA\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"mee-readmore-description\">Reform UK candidate descended from top Muslim scholar rues racist abuse in campaign<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"mee-readmore-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/reform-uk-candidate-muslim-scholar-racist-abuse-campaign\">Read More \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In late 2001, the US and its close allies invaded Afghanistan, which has remained in a state of turmoil and instability ever since.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watson.brown.edu\/costsofwar\/costs\/human\/civilians\/afghan#:~:text=As%20of%20September%202021%2C%20more,massive%20increase%20in%20civilian%20casualties.%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More than\u00a0<\/a>70,000 Afghan and Pakistani civilians are estimated to have died as a direct result of the war, and tens of thousands more have fled the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the Taliban seized power again and the US withdrew from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>The UK&#8217;s Home Office said at the time that &#8220;no one found to be at legitimate risk of persecution or serious harm will be expected to return to their country of origin&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, nine Afghans have been deported to Afghanistan from Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Reform takes a different approach. Its new deportation plan would involve a new law barring anyone from claiming asylum, and mandating that the government deports migrants who arrived illegally.<\/p>\n<p>Asked on Tuesday about the risk of deported Afghans being killed or tortured, Farage\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2025\/08\/26\/taliban-ready-and-willing-work-with-nigel-farage-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: &#8220;It bothers me, but what really bothers me is what is happening on the streets of our country. What really bothers me is what is happening to British citizens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn &#8211; an independent MP and key figure in the establishment of a new, as yet unnamed left-wing party &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jeremycorbyn\/status\/1960631158166671441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday: &#8220;I am sickened by the relentless demonisation of refugees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No refugee underfunded a school. No refugee closed a hospital. No refugee took away support from the sick and disabled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need solutions, not scapegoats.
