Check out what&#8217;s clicking on Foxnews.com.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Amid a counterterrorism operation in the northern region of Baghdad, a French soldier lost his life in combat, as reported by the French military.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The operation, directed towards an Islamic State group cell, also resulted in injuries to two Iraqi soldiers and four other French troops.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>French military forces contributed air support to the operation, which centered on dismantling an Islamic State cell in the al-Aith region of Salahaddin province.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"speakable\">A French soldier serving alongside Iraqi forces was killed in combat during a counterterrorism operation north of Baghdad, according to the French military.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container tablet ad-h-50 ad-w-300\">\n<div data-iu=\"lb2\" class=\"ad gam\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-container mobile ad-h-250 ad-w-300 ad-placeholder-load\">\n<div data-iu=\"ban1\" id=\"mobile-mw-ad-ban1\" class=\"ad gam inline\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Such losses among foreign forces in Iraq have been rare in recent years. Two Iraqi soldiers and four other French troops were also wounded in the operation, which an Iraqi official said was targeting a cell of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/world\/terrorism\/isis\">Islamic State group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sgt. Nicolas Mazier of parachute commando No. 10 was on a reconnaissance mission Monday with Iraqi forces about 60 miles north of Baghdad when a group of extremists attacked Iraqi forces, the French military said in a statement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container desktop ad-h-50 ad-w-300\">\n<div data-iu=\"lb2\" class=\"ad gam\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mazier was wounded in the ensuing shootout and died in the hospital Tuesday, the statement said. However, sleeper cells remain and have carried out attacks that have killed scores of Iraqis and Syrians.<\/p>\n<p>Rural areas of Kirkuk, Diyala, Ninevah and Salahaddin provinces in particular have been difficult to police, with Iraqi security forces spread thin and IS militants routinely terrorizing residents. At times they have managed to overrun towns overnight due to the security gaps.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container tablet ad-h-50 ad-w-300\">\n<div data-iu=\"lb4\" class=\"ad gam\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mazier had been deployed since July in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/frances-parliament-approves-multi-billion-euro-military-spending-boost-spurred-russias-war-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France\u2019s military operation<\/a> in the region, called Chammal, to help train Iraqi anti-terrorism forces.
